Melting Walls – Volume 2 / Exhibition in Montreux
The selection of the moving image works of Melting Walls – Volume 2 was made to promote a suggestive dialogue with the sound installation of Yanran Bi, and the close environment in Montreux, Switzerland.
The invited artist created the sound installation (Only the Glaciers Know) in a residency in Iceland. She was inspired by the soundscapes of the glacial landscape, immersing herself into the environment, composing a distinctive sound installation with the specific resonances of the place.
In the exhibition from Montreux you will find two projections that will screen a diverse selection of video art projects of local or international moving image artists.
One projector will screen films that explore the deep interconnection between body and environment, reminding about the phenomenological dimensions of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and on the second projector there will be films with environmental elements in movement, ambients, that reminds about the themes present in Deleuze’s essay, Desert Islands, where islands symbolize isolation, creation, and the dual forces of emergence and destruction.
Deleuze speaks of islands as spaces born from a complex interaction between what surrounds them and their internal dynamics. I think this concept finds resonance in the sound project of Yanran Bi (Only Glaciers Know), where glaciers like island exist in a state of both immense power and fragile transience.
They are both creators, shaping landscapes, and subjects of destruction, slowly disappearing under the pressure of global climate change.
